Can I wash the bags and re-use them?
Our Breast Milk Storage Bags are designed to be used only once. However, you can explore reusable storage options like our Portable Breast Milk Cooler and Glass Breast Milk Pitcher if you aren’t looking for a single-use option.
How long can I store the bags at room temp, in the fridge, or in the freezer?
It’s important to follow the safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) when storing your breast milk. Before storing your milk, always make sure to label your storage container with the time, date, and amount pumped.
- Room temperature: It is optimal to keep your milk at room temperature for no longer than 4 hours, although 6-8 is acceptable in very clean conditions.
- Fridge: Breast milk stored in the fridge is optimally used within 4 days, although 5-8 days is acceptable in very clean conditions.
- Freezer: It is best to use frozen milk within the first 6 months, although it can remain in a deep freezer for up to 12 months.
- Cooler bag: Whether you have an insulated bag with ice packs or an insulated thermos, breast milk should be used (or transferred into the fridge or freezer) within 24 hours.
How can I thaw breast milk in the bags?
There are a few options for thawing your breast milk.
- Milk can be thawed in the refrigerator. It will take between 4 and 12 hours to defrost completely. Always thaw bags standing up to avoid leaks.
- Milk can also be thawed under a stream of warm water, or by being placed in a bowl of warm water. If using a bowl, swirl gently to speed defrosting and to make sure that the fatty parts of the milk (which may separate when frozen) are incorporated. Make sure the temperature is no higher than 99 degrees.
Remember: breast milk should never be microwaved. Milk that has been previously frozen should never be frozen again. Completely defrosted milk can remain in the fridge for up to 24 hours, or at room temperature for two hours, before being used.
