Tips for (Sort of) Seamless Summer Travel: Baby Included

Embrace the Chaos and Create Unforgettable Moments.

POV: You’re in line at the Southwest Gate waiting for your group to board, when out of nowhere, your baby has a complete meltdown and right on cue, their toddler sibling does too. It’s a vibe!

Traveling with a new baby can seem daunting. And that’s because it is! The good news is that with a little preparation, you’ll feel a bit better when things (inevitably) go a bit off the rails.

Here’s what to bring on your next flight.

1. Diaper bag essentials

Diapers, wipes, and changing pads (we love the disposable ones that you can toss after laying your baby on the changing table in a public restroom!) are the holy trinity of baby travel. Ensure you have more than you think you'll need; it's always better to have extra. Pack a few changes of clothes for your baby, as milk spills and blowouts are all but guaranteed. Hand sanitizer is vital for keeping your hands clean when a wash basin isn't available. Disposal bags are handy for soiled diapers, particularly during air travel or when no trash bin is nearby.

2. An in-bra wearable pump

Traditional pumps are clunky and you’ll need to find an outlet to use one. The Willow Pump is the perfect pumping travel companion since it’s hands-free, cordless and can be used discreetly anywhere—even while you're holding your baby waiting for your coffee order. Don’t forget a pumping bag that’s big enough to hold your pumps and a cooler.

3. Travel-friendly baby gear

A lightweight stroller like the Donna (stroller + carseat in one!), Uppababy Minu, or YoYo Babyzen can be a boon when navigating airports or exploring new cities. They’re also approved to stash in the overhead bin so you can carry them on with you. If you’re also traveling with a toddler, you may want to put your baby in a carrier and reserve the stroller for taming your little wild one. And of course, a car seat is essential for road travel and many airlines also allow you to check it in for free.

4. Your baby’s comfort creatures

Familiar items from home, like a beloved toy, a pacifier, or a comfy blanket, can soothe your baby in unfamiliar surroundings. These items can also keep your baby entertained during long travel periods.

5. SNACKS!!

If your baby is on solids, packing enough baby food and snacks is critical. Remember, delays can happen, so it's wise to carry extra. Choosing easy-to-serve, travel-friendly options can make mealtimes smoother.

6. First-Aid Kit

A travel-sized first-aid kit can be invaluable for treating minor ailments or injuries. Consider packing items like a digital thermometer, baby pain reliever, band-aids, and antiseptic wipes. If your baby has specific medical needs, make sure you have sufficient supplies for the duration of your trip.

7. Formula (If you’re combo feeding)

If you’re supplementing with formula, make sure to pack some in your carry on — enough to last through flight delays or cancellations if they happen. Check with your airline to see if the formula needs to be labeled or handled during security.

8. Your most zen, go-with-the-flow attitude

Things will go wrong. Your baby will cry, spit up, poop up their back, or go on a nap strike. Try to stay calm and remember that you will get to your destination eventually!
